Questions, answered.

Is this legal advice?

No. DepositBack is an educational publisher — the kit is templates, statute citations, and process, not legal advice, and we're not a law firm. Laws change: verify your state's current statute before relying on it. For complex situations, talk to a licensed attorney or your local tenants' union.

Do I need a lawyer?

For a security deposit? Almost never. Small-claims court was built so people can represent themselves — no lawyer required — and most disputes never get that far, because the letters do the heavy lifting. The kit also tells you when a situation is genuinely worth a consultation.

I moved out months ago — is it too late?

Probably not. The deadline that's likely blown is your landlord's, not yours — most states give tenants years to pursue a wrongly kept deposit, and in many of them a landlord who missed the return deadline weakened or forfeited their claim to your money. Check your state's row in the chart, then send Letter One.

Which states does it cover?

All 50. The deadline and penalty chart has a row for every state.

What if my landlord ignores the letters?

Letters two and three escalate, and the small-claims playbook covers filing if they still don't pay — most filing fees are $30–$75.

Is it really instant?

Yes — the download link appears on the order confirmation screen and in your email immediately.

What's the refund policy?
